Would like to encourage new growth from part of a clemantis vine?

We divided a plant that was taking over an area and couldn't get it under control. Some of the vines broke off when we divided it. Can I make it grow roots? I don't know how to do this. Do you just put it in water? I tried using this stuff that you dip the end into and place it into soil but it's not doing very well. Is there something else I should do to get it to develop new root? I've seen plants in vases of water to encourage new growth.

And how to I get the plant that has been divided and replanted to thrive this year?

go to home depot or a local nursery and ask for rooting powder...if its a nursery they should be able to walk you through the process; basically you want to apply rooting powder to the place you want the roots to come from and plant it in a small isolated container in plenty of sunlight...water it apporpriately and be patient
Reply:i have just started with clematis plants, so i'm not too savy on them. i got one last year and it seems to be doing good.i would try putting it in water and see if it roots, what have you got to lose.as far as the other plant, sometimes when you transplant, it is a real shock to them.some make it and some dont. but what you have to do is water them every day, dont let it dry out at all, it will die.they say to put a lot of mulch around it too, it keeps the roots from getting too hot.
