Can pumkins be ripened off the vine?

Depending on the size, but not very successfully as they are so hard...you might try putting one in a large polythene bag with a couple of apples, tie it shut and leave it for a couple of days. The apples give off some kind of vapour that helps ripen avocados, try it with the pumpkin, what have you got to lose?

Reply:Absolutely!!.. we bought one last October to use for hallowe'en, and never got round to doing anything with it, the skin was too hard to cut so I just left it on a shelf in my living room... by christmas it was just right for cutting up and made the most delicious pumpkin pie..

any sort of squash will continue to ripen off the vine so long as it isn't in a damp place...
