How do you train a climbing vine to grow on a pergola?

I have some jasmine that is presently planted in three large pots and I would like to train it to grow on the pergola at my new house. Should I plant it in the ground and then try to train it or just leave it in the pots? What should I use to attach it to the posts until it is trained?

I am not familiar with Jasmine but many other vines. You have to plant them because after it gets trained there will come a day you will need to repot your plant but can't because then it will be too high out of the ground since the top of the pot soil is above the ground level and by then the vines aren't going to move on your pergola.I have used soft rags to tie my grape vine to a pergola until it got attached, but the wisteria needed no help that is for sure, it grabs onto everything! Another thing to keep in mind if it is possible,,,, plant them on the north end of your pergola so that they will grow toward the sun and not upward.

Reply:Plant it near the pergola and let it grow up it. You might have to use some ties to get it started and maybe to train it the way you want it to look.
Reply:Plant in the ground.

Tie it up carefully and loosely the direction that you wish it to grow. Use panty hoes or specific plant tie material from LOWES or HOME DEPOT, etc... for this purpose.

As it grows, just wrap it around and keep training and tying...if needed. It should take off by itself eventually.

With a chair, a whip and a gun.

TFTP
Reply:go ahead %26amp; plant it ,then every time you walk by just keep tucking the "excapee" vines back through. It will be trained in no time.
Reply:Yes, plant the jasmine in the ground next to the legs (poles)

of the pergola. You can purchase a green plastic plant tie, comes on a roll in any Garden Center, it is recommend for tying plants to stakes, poles, fences, etc.

It stretches as the plant grows so it would rip into the branches of the plants. Just make such you leave a some slack when you tie your plant runners onto the pergola.
