What exactly is a hummingbird vine?

I can't find any info on it online, The tag it cam with just said hardy zones 4-9, shade to sun, and grows up to 60 ft (with support), and tract hummingbirds. I live in Chicago, zone 5, will it need winter protection? What other animals does it attract? Where can I find more growing information?

What exactly is a hummingbird vine?
I've heard at least two vines that have this common name:

Ipomoea quamoclit (Hummingbird vine, Cypress vine, Cardinal creeper, etc.) and Campsis radicans (Hummingbird vine, Trumpet vine).

Ipomoea (this was formerly called Quamoclit pennata) is an annual with red flowers. It has feathery foliage and is loved by hummingbirds, of course. It gets 15-20 feet tall and needs sun/part shade. http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/C...

Campsis is quite a monster. It re-seeds and it a vigorous grower where I am (it's kind of thought of as a weed here). It needs sun/part shade and is rated to USDA Z4. There are some named varieties available with different colored flowers.

I would bet that you have the Campsis. To find out more about it, search for Campsis radicans in the search box and you will find a ton of info. and links.

Best of luck! :)
Reply:Trumpet Vine. It will take over so be carefull where you plant it as it will climb and spread like crazy. It is very hardy and will not need protection through the winter.
Reply:Trumpet Vine. Our neighbor had one on a trellis along side her house and the thing grew in behind the siding on the house and was quite destructive. Be sure where ever you plant it that it has a fence or something to climb on. I live in the Midwest and they grow wild here. They will also reseed themselves.
