Is capitalism (like a strangler vine) crushing the ethics out of people as its intensifies its pernicious grip

on human behaviour?

isnt the reducing of everything to money [sport, art, film etc] impoverishing us all...

..and opening the door to questionable selfish behaviour, because whenever a situation arises of choosing what is right against what is profitable, the virus capitalism has injected into our moral system is going to exert its stranglehold on our behaviour.

or at the very least is going to tempt even those with a strong and steadfast ethical make-up, to choose to do the dubious...before the choose to do right.

is that not a definition of corruption?

Is capitalism (like a strangler vine) crushing the ethics out of people as its intensifies its pernicious grip
Yes, but not because of capitalism itself.

Like all "ideal" social-political / economic ideologies, capitalism could work, if it were not for the corruption of it by corrupt people. Currently, capitalism is not free to operate on the micro scales. It only operates on the mega-macro scales of international corporations and increasingly invasive government. If capitalism was actually practiced by the populace, not giant corporations and government, then it would be responsive to the will of a free market. However, corporate giants, political despots and religious brainwashing have far more influence than they should because they are the ones with the most capital to spend and therefore, access to advertising media and populace-shifting propaganda.

The analogy of a strangler vine is apt, but I think the analogy of a spreading cancer is more accurate. Like the strangler vine, cancer feeds on the host, but it has a self-limiting mechanism. Capitalism cannot survive if it completely devours its victim.

The capitalism of today debases art, inculcates greed and promotes lies. The consumerist mindset it fosters lowers cultural values and replaces them with material madness. The net effect of television is lowered intelligence, lower self-reliance, lower standards of education and lower ethical awareness.

Capitalism as it is practiced today is corrupt and evil.

It wouldn't be if we followed the rules of a truly free market.

In any case, the system that supports it will inevitably change. It has to. Or else, it will kill itself.

Either that, or a complacent populace will become a self-regenerating host for the cancer of the greedy rich and power-hungry elites.

oops! We're already there!

Reply:Pure capitalism coupled with free enterprise is the most moral of systems. Here is why. Joe Businessman freely makes his product, and I am free to buy it. In such a transaction, no one was compelled, and both parties are the better for it. Competition results in better products more efficiently produced which translates into quality products at fair prices. What's better than that?
Reply:Sure it is? I agree with the third and fourth answers.
