I have found his work email address and want to contact him (it's been 10 years). What do I say in the email without actually making an idiot of myself? I want him to reply with his personal email, but I don't want to hit on him incase he is married with kids now!

Than ask how he is doing. Hopefully he'll indicate whether or not they are still together. If he doesn't give you a straight answer just leave it alone. Like you said you don't want to hit on him if he is married.
