Whats the difference between vine ripened tomatoes and homegrown?

Which one tastes better?

Sorry if its a stupid question!!

Whats the difference between vine ripened tomatoes and homegrown?
It's not a stupid question at all. Most homegrown tomatoes are vine ripened. There are also companies that sell to the stores that let the tomatoes ripen on the vine. The vine ripened ones I buy at the supermarket taste pretty much the same as the ones I grow. But, don't refrigerate them! They loose a lot of their flavor when they're chilled.
Reply:Home grown is much better! You pick it and you eat it. Sure, the vine-ripened may actually be vine-ripened- but it had to be transported to the store and who knows how long it's been sitting on the shelf. Plus, they're expensive!
Reply:homegrown are called heirloom tomatoes in the store and they usually are ugly looking but taste great

vine ripened usually cost the most and look the best...they dont taste as good as heirloom
Reply:not a stupid question:) .... Vine-ripened are grown on a farm, and, although better than other tomatoes, STILL don't seem to have that yummy flavor that homegrown has.... I don't know why, but they just taste so wonderful when you pick them off your own vine, and they're still warm from the sun:)
Reply:Vine ripened tomatoes are tomatoes that have been left on the plant until they are ripe %26amp; ready to eat. To me that doesn't mean they are always homegrown. They could have been grown in hot houses, not outside in the real weather. My homegrown tomatoes are grown in my dirt in my backyard %26amp; stay on the vine until they are red %26amp; ripe %26amp; ready to eat. I like to buy green homegrown tomatoes to make tomato pickles %26amp; fried green tomatoes. I also like to put them in my kitchen window %26amp; watch them turn ripe. They aren't vine ripened but they are homegrown. That's not a stupid question %26amp; there's a huge difference in homegrown %26amp; store bought tomatoes.
