I am interested in planting trumpet vine. Does it get big and is it hard to control.?

I have seen that plant send runner through a lawn, below the "radar" of the mower, and unnoticed by the homeowner. it proceeded to go under a deck, reach the house, and grow up the side of the house - UNDER the siding. They didn't know they had a problem until the saw it around the gutters - seemingly miles away from the original plant. Also - those runners, if unnoticed, grow thick (over an inch diameter), and hard like oak, with really strong rootlets that grip the ground like iron about every 12 inches.

I also spent weeks trying to hack it out of a neighbor's backyard (who had been ill for three years). I failed. It has put an extremely healthy respect/fear of this plant. It's versitile in it's growth patterns (up, around, under, along the ground, over trees), and scary fast growing.

It does have its points, though. The hummingbirds visited its flowers every evening, a few hours before dusk. They didn't seem nearly as loyal to any other flower around here, and I do love hummers.

I have seen it grown as a standard in a pot, with frequent trimming. Also - the pot was on a sidewalk, and the nearest open ground was about 20 feet away. It probably would have had a hard time making a break for it undetected.

So I'm not going to say don't grow it - but keep a real sharp eye on it or it just might eat your house.

it grows as big as 40 feet and almost does it in one entire season! just make sure that it isn't close to anything u don't want it to climb and grow on! if it starts getting out of hand just trim and prune or "train" the vines in ur desired direction! hummingbirds love this plant too!
Reply:I have one and it can grow very large and take over the space where it is located. It's best to grow it on a lattice or fence where it has a lot of room to roam and prune good after blooming season and before next year's buds appear.
Reply:It grows big and can be hard to control. You'll need to constantly keep cutting it back.
Reply:It's a really pretty vine. Hummingbirds and bees will be attracted to it. If you have a fence or trellis for it to climb, it will be wonderful.

The seed amounts are amazing..and this is where the problems arize because if you aren't careful, it will then take over the yard. I loved the one I had and the little flowers were beautiful.
