What causes tomatoes, on the vine, to split at the top before they're ripe?

actually it is too much water after a dry period! If a tomato is used to getting a gallon of water every evening it will not split, but if it goes for say a week without and then you over water with say two or three gallons then,,, rip,,,, it will split
