Need suggestions for a climbing vine for a Lamp Post?

I have a round bed of liorope at the base. It is thick and dense. If I do plant a vine would I need to clean out the bed so it would have room to grow? I am in the US, Zone 8. The lamp post is in the full sun.

Reply:You could plant morning glory (annual), but they'd need some string to cling too. A trumpet vine (perennial) is nice but may get too big or the suckers get too annoying for you. Honeysuckle can be nice.



I'd go to a reputable nursery and ask there. They'd probably have some mature specimens for you to see and would know more about what would be better for your location.



You may have to move the Liorope a bit to give your vine some space.

Reply:Try a Potato Vine they don't flower but they have large green leaves. And put on potatoes in the fall. ( None edible Potatoes)
Reply:Clematis, roses , jasmine are good choices. Just check and see what does best in your zone and depending on if the spot is in sun/shade/partial sun. IVY has provided you with a good website. Park Seed is a great company and also sends me catalogs quite often. Of couse checking your local nursery would be even better, they'll provide you with a bigger plant......... (edit) Zone 8 here myself. Jasmine, roses and clematis would still be a good bet for you. All these vines will take over a little so just prune them back a little when they get out of control. I LOVE the star jasmine I planted in our yard it smells amazing. When we only had 10 flowers on it you could still smell it 20 feet away. I got a 2 ft. plant from our local nursery for $15 and it was already blooming.
Reply:Plant a Clematis Vine it loves full sun. I would attach a small wooden trellis or small sheet of wire fence on your lamp post to encourage the vine to climb up on.
