Tarzan (m = 87 kg) tries to cross a river by swinging from a 13.0 m long vine.?

His speed at the bottom of the swing, just as he clears the water, is 4.0 m/s. Tarzan doesn't know that the vine has a breaking strength of 1.0 103 N. What is the total force Tarzan excerts on the vine?

Answer is in N.

Tarzan (m = 87 kg) tries to cross a river by swinging from a 13.0 m long vine.?
tarzans swings in a circular motion (half a circle). Therefore net force is = mv^2/r

At bottom of his swing there are two forces acting on him the tension of the rope and gravitational pull.

Net Force=mv^2/r = T - mg

= (87kg) x (4m/s^2) / (13m) = T - (87kg x 9.8m/s^2)

T=960N

Tension of rope is equal to the force tarzan exerts on vine.
