Watermelon rotting on vine?

I had the same problem last year. My melons only grow a little bit and then they get all soft and have black blotches on them. The ground they are sitting on stays pretty dry, and the leaves and vines look good. What could it be?

I have had this same experience. I found out that it was due to overwatering. Make sure the soil drains well, and cut down on watering to about every other day.
Reply:Even though the ground looks dry, it's not. The best thing you can do is to put something between the fruit and the ground. I've seen people use straw, newspaper, and even old composite roofing shingles! I personally like to use straw, because it works well, and can be tilled back into the ground the next time you need to work the soil.

Good luck!
Reply:You should place your melons on a tile or a brick. This keeps them above the soil.

Make sure that the ground under the vines is not getting "run off" water from somewhere else. That would make it very damp.

Good Luck!!
