Need a vine/climber for very shady area?

I live in Conntecticut and have a very shady front porch that I'd like to plant a couple climbing vines near, to climb the railings. I'm having a hard time finding shade-loving vines. Any suggestions?

Need a vine/climber for very shady area?
Ivy "Hedera" ivys... Carolina jassamine "Gelsemium sempervirens"… Trumpet vine / creepers "Campsis radicans"… Japanese honeysuckle...
Reply:Most of the clematis types we have in our garden are in shade and thrive - sometimes a bit too well! The different flowers are gorgeous too and go on for months.
Reply:I'm mid-Hudson so I know that that is a challenge. You won't get flowering vines to do much at all. Some Clematis varieties do OK provided they get a nice shot of sun for at least a few hours. There is always ivy (yawn) although there are some nice gold variegated varieties. I use a rather obscure one for shady areas that produces interesting pseudo-flowers. It is called Dutchmans Pipe. It may take you a little hunting , but it is a hardy perennial climber that likes cool feet.( Your friends will all wonder what the interesting vine you have is!)
Reply:I would also suggest the Virgina Creeper. It does seem to grow in shady areas, but keep in mind it is deciduous.

Finding a climber for your shaded area will be hard as most flower and need the light to do so well.

You could also try the common Jasmine.
Reply:English Ivy if you want a non native invasive species. Virginia Creeper if you want a native species.
Reply:Try a climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea Petiolaris ) if you have partial shade or Golden or Green Gaiety Euonymus for deeper shade. I would stay away from Ivy vines as they can become very invasive.
Reply:English Ivy will grow anywhere. If you want a flowering vine, Clematis vines are beautiful and may will tolerate the shade.
Reply:I suggest a wisteria it is a very fast grower-and beautiful also

but it takes a couple of years to really come into itself and show it full potential
