It needs to be pretty, low maintenance and not destroy the wood (Cedar). I prefer something that flowers and grows much of the year (I live in Northern Califonia, close to San Francisco)The house has a "zen" Japanese feel to the outside and the wooden structure also has that same feel. Any help would be appreciated!
What type of flowering vine should I put on my newly built decorative wooden portico above my front door?..?
i would recommend the Chilean Potato Tree (Solanum crispum): it's a climber (evergreen in mild regions like California) and produces masses of purple flowers with brilliant yellow stamens, followed by red berries- very spectacular. easy to grow and care for and in flower for much of the year. doesn't need a lot of food or pruning so is much lower maintenance than either clematis or wisteria. Good luck!
Reply:Wisteria is nice, if it grows in your area.
Reply:Try Clematis Montana, they are very pretty and very easy to take care. However they grow fast and spread everywhere if you let them.
Reply:Clematis is pretty and it looks sort of like the tattoo style japanese cherry blossoms. They come in a lot of different colors. When I lived in WA state, we had them on a trellis near our entry. They livened it up.

Or hummingbird vine? It stays green most of the year. And has delicate little flowers on them in spring/summer. You'd also attract butterflies and humming birds... (for me that's a plus!)
