I need a vine that will cover a chain link fence, but not poisonous to dogs and that won't take over my yard?

Any perennial you plant will take over. Stick to the annuals. In the fall they're done. And, you have a variety every year.

Every vine takes over if not trimmed.

You need to go to a local nursery for local varieties.
Reply:yeah honeysuckle ,if you get a hybred the flowers are large and ooooo the smell.
Reply:morning glories are beautiful and smell great and attract humming birds
Reply:It depends upon whether or not you want some kind of coverage all year long or not. Carolina Jessamine, Jasmine, Honeysuckle, or trumpet vine are all excellent choices. You might also want to consider a rambling rose as well.
Reply:Hops or honeysuckle...they grow fast and come back every year.
