How does a (flower) vine know that there is some thing nearby for it to grab onto?

I have a vine sitting in my window, and I find it amazing that it will actually reach towards things that are nearby it so it can climb higher. I understand the reason why plants will reach towards an area that gets the most light, but the things that my plant is reaching for is in different areas, including a darker area away from the window where a vase is sitting that it's now hooked on. It's so weird, yet awesome.

It will move around, seeking something to grow against. I've seen it on speeded up photography. It is quite remarkable.
