Help with growing sweet potoato vine ?

i am trying to grow a sweet potato vine in water, i got the idea from this site. :)

however i dont know which end i should put into the water. both ends look the same, i cant figure out what the root end is.

is it ok to put it either ways ?

please advice. thanks.

It really doesn't matter, but the pointed end fits in the jar or glass better. Potatoes, like seeds, will grow roots downward and in the water and the foliage will grow upward in the air no matter what.
Reply:This brought back lots of memories.My mom used to do this years ago.

Just cut off one end of the sweet potato.Use about a one to one and a half inch piece.Usually the fat end is the root end.

Place this on a dish(plate,whatever) in water with the cut side in the water.My mom always placed hers on a sunny windowsill.

It grows lovely vines and they last quite awhile too.

Now that you brought this memory back,I'm gonna grow one too.

Put the narrow or more pointed end down.



My grandpa would just take a sweet potato, then get an old wide mouth mason jar or mayo glass jar and fill the jar full of water. Then he'd submerge the sweet potato about half to two-thirds under water and stuck toothpicks into the sides of the sweet potato to hold it in that position in the jar. Then he'd just stick the jar with the sweet potato in it in front of their picture window. The sweet potato would grow roots out of the bottom of it and green sprouts out of the top of it. Once the sprouts got so tall (about 6 inches or a little more), he'd cut the sprouts off and stick them in water and let them grow roots. Once the sprouts had grown enough roots he'd plant them in the garden.
Reply:How about buying more than one and try both. OR put the one on its side in a wide deep bowl full of water.
