Pole Beans- What's the best way to let them vine?

I was thinking about planting pole beans again in my garden next year, but was wondering what are the best ways to get them to vine. I didn't use string this year, as I've seen a lot of people do, but use bamboo poles. What are other ways to grow them? Would a trellis do better?

Poles are good. But this year at Lowes hardward they have spiral type wire for beans etc, in a cone shape.. Different size. good Luck Pat

Reply:The bamboo pole "teepees" and the growing up the corn stalk method are both time honored traditions and work fine. I have had a bit better luck with a simple trellis system. I drive 7 foot metal stakes a foot into the ground, with about 5 feet between the stakes. Then I use recycled baling twine to string between the poles, with about 5 or 6 inch spacing. The bean plants are easily trained up to the top of the 6-foot trellis system, and they have room to spread out a bit instead of wrapping around themselves. This, and that fact that I can approach the plants from both sides, makes it a bit easier to tend and harvest the beans. Also, if you run the row east to west, there is less of an issue of creating unwanted shade on other parts of the garden, as can sometimes happen with a big teepee arrangement.
Reply:I like to let them grow up the railing of our back steps. They're pretty and very handy.
Reply:Plant corn and then a couple of weeks after it comes up plant the pole beans in between the corn. as the beans grow, train them to grow up the cornstalks.

this way you get two crops in the same space.
